Move a citation file with a complete field report
Choose the citation direction and unmapped-field policy, verify authors and identifiers, and inspect an import copy with its complete mapping report.
Prepare one complete original
Choose BibTeX → RIS or RIS → BibTeX before reading a file. Paste the complete citation material, or select its original UTF-8 file. A filename suffix does not change the explicit direction. Leave macros and cross-references resolved in your source manager; this converter refuses them.
| BibTeX source or target | RIS source or target | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| article / book / inproceedings | JOUR / BOOK / CPAPER | RIS CONF input also becomes inproceedings; BibTeX conference-paper output uses CPAPER. |
| author / editor | AU / A2 output; AU or A1 authors and A2 or ED editors on input | Compare every name in order, including suffixes and corporate spelling. |
| title | TI output; TI or T1 input | Check φ and capitalization. Exact source braces and LaTeX commands remain in the report; title protection applies when producing BibTeX. |
| journal (article) / booktitle (inproceedings) | T2; JO and JF are also accepted journal input tags | Check the record type and the actual container field in the report; these fields are not interchangeable across types. |
| year | PY output; PY or Y1 input | RIS year input must be four digits. A fuller calendar value is refused or kept only in the explicit sidecar; a missing year is not filled. |
| pages | SP / EP | SP/EP map one start–end range. In BibTeX → RIS, other page lists are refused or retained in the explicit sidecar. |
| doi / url / isbn / issn | DO / UR / SN | Compare literal identifiers. RIS SN becomes issn for JOUR and isbn otherwise; no DOI lookup fills missing metadata. |
| Unfamiliar source field | No reliable target mapping | Default rejection stops conversion. Explicit sidecar mode preserves the full original field and position in citation-mapping.json, not in the target citation file. |
- One citation file can contain many entries.
- Keep author order and all source fields when preparing it.
- A missing publication year stays missing.
Choose how unfamiliar fields are handled
The default rejection policy stops on a field that cannot be reliably mapped. With the explicit full sidecar policy, conversion continues and lists each omitted field, its raw text and source position. Keep citation-mapping.json: a target citation file alone does not contain these fields.
RIS can carry the interpreted text of a LaTeX title but cannot preserve BibTeX case-protection semantics. The report retains exact braces and commands. When converting to BibTeX, the title protection checkbox adds a group around title and booktitle text. Corporate names use an explicit trailing comma in RIS.
Inspect all records before importing
Read every report record and mapped field, then save both files. Compare authors, title, container, pages, year, DOI and identifiers against the original. A screen preview ends after 4,000 codepoints; full copy and download retain the entire output.
Cancel a running conversion if needed. No partial file is published, and the original File and parameters remain in memory for another run. The new Worker has a fresh 10-second deadline that includes loading and reading. Import a copy into the intended manager and inspect its result; this local converter does not control that manager’s import rules.

The question supplied JSON and later found an existing BibTeX entry. Replies describe an actual ris2xml/xml2bib workflow and a web converter accepting concatenated RIS; they do not supply the test RIS bytes used here.
