How to compress JPG, PNG and WebP images in Neatbo
Compress a photo locally, choose JPEG or WebP output, handle transparency, and compare real file size with text and edge quality.
Keep the original
Choose a JPEG or WebP photo you own. The tool reads it locally and does not overwrite it. PNG input can be re-encoded as JPEG or WebP; pick a background when transparency is not supported.
Choose an output and inspect pixels
Select an output format and start with a moderate quality setting. Download the result and compare fine text, hair, edges and gradients at the same display scale. Quality is an encoder parameter, not a promised percentage reduction.
Check the actual byte count
A small or already compressed image can become larger after re-encoding. The result reports actual output bytes and warns when compression did not reduce size. Keep whichever file best fits your use. Animated inputs and oversized decoded images are rejected.
Choose settings for the content, not a promised percentage
For a 2400 × 1600 photograph displayed at 1200 × 800 CSS pixels, a 1200 × 800 export has one quarter as many pixels. That is a dimension calculation, not a prediction of file size. High-density screens or later cropping may justify retaining a larger version.
Export each candidate from the original. Recompressing a previous lossy output can accumulate artifacts, making a quality setting hard to compare fairly. Inspect small text, hair, flat gradients and boundaries at the same display scale.
| Image content | Try first | Inspect closely |
|---|---|---|
| Photograph | JPEG or WebP | Fine detail and gradients |
| Transparent logo | WebP output | Alpha edges against light and dark |
| Text screenshot | Compare with the original PNG | Small letters and high-contrast edges |
| Already compressed thumbnail | Keep original as a candidate | Whether output actually became smaller |
Before you finish
- Keep transparency only with a supporting output format.
- Choose a background deliberately when exporting JPEG.
- Compare actual input and output bytes.
- Download and reopen the selected candidate before publishing.
