Work in order and retain the original

Preview the document before choosing Word, HTML or PDF output. Check heading hierarchy before page layout: a visual size change is not necessarily a heading. External resources are not fetched automatically. When converting existing Word or HTML, compare structure and links before treating the result as the new source of truth.

Keep code fences around literal examples.

Separate processing success from acceptance

Reopen the export and inspect tables, list nesting, code and links. Conversion does not execute scripts or recover layout that the source format cannot express.

Before you finish

Expand a tool below for its steps, options and limits. Choose the tools needed for your task; you do not need to use every one.

  • Reopen the export and inspect tables, list nesting, code and links. Conversion does not execute scripts or recover layout that the source format cannot express.
  • Reopen the download and compare it with the example and the meaning of the input.
  • When an input exceeds the stated boundaries, retain it and split the task or use a suitable processor; renaming an extension does not make it compatible.

Word to MarkdownMove Word text, links, and embedded images into Markdown.

Read editable DOCX paragraphs, headings, numbered lists, tables and supported links into Markdown. Embedded raster images travel with the Markdown in a ZIP. Word page layout is not reproduced.

Steps

  1. Choose the local .docx file. The working copy stays in this browser.
  2. Select “Convert to Markdown” after choosing the DOCX.
  3. Compare links, headings, lists and tables with the Word source. If images are present, download and extract the ZIP so the Markdown and its asset folder stay together; copied text or a standalone Markdown download still needs that folder.

Capabilities and limits

  • Document packages are limited to 20 MiB, 2,000 entries and 100 MiB expanded. The first table row becomes the Markdown header. HTTP(S), email and bookmarked-heading links are supported; embedded body PNG, JPEG, GIF and WebP images are exported. Linked images, other image formats and non-heading bookmarks are rejected. Comments, headers, footers, fields, embedded objects and complex layout are not reproduced; macros and external targets are not executed or fetched.
  • Each package entry must expand by no more than 100 times its compressed size; highly compressed or malformed packages are rejected.
