Preparing the tool…

Before you start

Convert local article, book and conference-paper references with ordered authors, complete source records and a field mapping report.

How to use this tool

  1. Choose the conversion direction and paste or select the complete citation file.
  2. Keep rejection as the default; choose the sidecar policy only when you will review every omitted field.
  3. Generate and inspect the entry count, ordered authors, normalized fields and sidecar-only fields.
  4. Copy or download the target and citation-mapping.json together; import a copy into the receiving reference manager and compare the complete records.

Supported inputs and limits

Paste one input or choose one UTF-8 file up to 1 MiB; do not provide both. Allow 1,000 entries, 10,000 fields, 64 KiB per field and 32 levels of BibTeX braces.

Article, book and conference paper are supported together. Author order, repeated RIS author tags and Unicode stay in order. A trailing comma identifies a corporate RIS author; review this convention in your reference manager.

Unknown fields are rejected by default. Choose the full sidecar policy to omit them from the target while keeping every original field, its source position and the complete source text in the mapping report. Macros, preambles and cross-references are refused in both policies.

LaTeX accents and supported formatting use the citation parser. RIS has no BibTeX case-protection syntax; source braces and LaTeX remain in the report. The title protection checkbox wraps RIS titles when generating BibTeX. Unknown LaTeX commands are refused or retained only in the report.

Calendar dates in PY/Y1 beyond a four-digit year, page lists beyond one range, ambiguous personal names and repeated note/URL fields require correction or an explicit sidecar policy. Repeated title, container and year fields must be corrected under both policies. Missing year remains missing.

Copy and download contain the entire target; the page shows at most 4,000 codepoints. The target allows 4 MiB and the mapping report 16 MiB. The 10-second conversion limit includes startup, loading and reading; cancellation publishes no partial result.

Files and names stay in this browser. This tool does not fetch DOI metadata, read NBIB or JSON citations, deduplicate references, or render a bibliography style.

Worked example

Example input

@article{demo,title={A {DNA} study},author={Doe, Jane},year={2025}}
Example options
direction=bibtex-to-ris; unsupportedPolicy=reject; protectTitles=true

Example output

TY  - JOUR
ID  - demo
TI  - A DNA study
AU  - Doe, Jane
PY  - 2025
ER  -

When something does not work

Repair syntax, duplicate keys, macros or cross-references, or reduce an over-budget input. The original file and options remain available after cancellation; run the conversion again when ready.

Frequently asked questions

Does a converted RIS file preserve LaTeX braces?

The target carries the interpreted title text. The mapping report retains the exact source, raw fields and case-protecting braces, so keep it with the target.

Are unfamiliar fields silently removed?

Rejection is the default. The explicit sidecar policy lists every field that is absent from the target and retains its exact original text.
