Tool input and files are processed in this browser without being uploaded.
Before you start
Choose a single file and download a standard .gz copy. This is useful when a recipient or workflow specifically asks for GZIP; it does not bundle several files into an archive.
How to use this tool
- Choose the one file that needs a .gz copy, such as a log or text file.
- Optionally enter an attachment limit in MiB, then compress and compare the original and GZIP sizes.
- Download the .gz file. Before sending it, open it with a GZIP reader if your recipient requires exact contents.
Supported inputs and limits
One file at a time, up to 50 MiB; an empty file is accepted. GZIP is not encryption.
Processing stays in your browser. GZIP may be larger than the original and an attachment limit check cannot guarantee that an email service accepts the file.
Worked example
Example input
book.txt

{}Example output

}When something does not work
Choose one file up to 50 MiB. If compression is unavailable, use an up-to-date browser with GZIP stream support.
Frequently asked questions
Are files uploaded?
No. The selected file is read and compressed in this browser.
Can I compress a folder or make a .tar.gz?
This tool compresses one selected file. To make .tar.gz, first create a TAR archive elsewhere, then compress that TAR file here. Use ZIP packing if you need to bundle several files directly.
Will this meet my email attachment limit?
Enter the optional limit to compare it with the downloaded .gz file size. GZIP may grow; email encoding and service rules may add overhead, so confirm with the recipient service.
