Extract GZIP
Restore one .gz or .gzip file and download the original bytes.
- 1Add input
- 2Review and run
- 3Get your result
Tool input and files are processed in this browser without being uploaded.
Before you start
Restore one .gz or .gzip file in your browser and download its uncompressed bytes. The browser checks GZIP integrity and the tool limits expansion. A .tar.gz file becomes a .tar file; its TAR contents remain packed.
How to use this tool
- Choose a local .gz or .gzip file; it stays in your browser.
- Select “Extract GZIP” and check the restored size and download name.
- Download the restored file. For .tar.gz, this step yields a .tar archive rather than the files inside it.
Supported inputs and limits
Input is limited to 50 MiB, restored data to 100 MiB and expansion ratio to 100. This tool processes one GZIP file at a time.
Worked example
Example input
hello.txt.gz
Example options
{}Example output
hello.txt — 18 bytes restored; GZIP integrity passed.
When something does not work
An invalid header, damaged GZIP checksum or excessive expansion stops extraction without a download. Check that the input is really GZIP; ZIP files need the ZIP Extract tool.
Frequently asked questions
Are my files uploaded?
No. Files and tool input are processed in your browser. Moving around the site can keep a temporary workspace in the same tab. Refreshing or closing the tab clears it, so download results you want to keep.
Why did I get a .tar file?
GZIP compresses a single stream. A .tar.gz combines TAR packaging with GZIP compression, so this tool removes the GZIP layer and leaves the .tar archive for a TAR extractor.
