Data size converter
Convert bit and byte amounts across decimal MB/GB and binary MiB/GiB units.
- 1Add input
- 2Adjust settings
- 3Get your result
Tool input and files are processed in this browser without being uploaded.
Before you start
Enter a data amount, choose source and target units, and compare decimal (powers of 1,000) with binary (powers of 1,024) sizes. The result always names its unit.
How to use this tool
- Enter an amount and choose a common pair, or select the two units directly.
- Check whether each unit is in bits or bytes and whether its prefix is decimal or binary.
- Convert, then copy the number with its target unit or download the full equality.
Supported inputs and limits
Values must be nonnegative and no greater than 1e100; nonzero values too small to represent are rejected. Display rounding does not make a large or fractional result exact.
This converts data amounts, not transfer rates such as Mb/s; it does not inspect or change a file. All input stays in this browser.
Some interfaces label binary sizes as MB or GB. Check the source definition or raw byte count before selecting a unit.
Worked example
Example input
Example options
{
"value": 1,
"from": "MiB",
"to": "byte"
}Example output
1 MiB = 1048576 B
When something does not work
Use a nonnegative amount and a supported unit. If a result is too large, choose a larger target unit. Editing an input marks the earlier result as out of date; a failed conversion clears it.
Frequently asked questions
How are MB and MiB different?
1 MB is 1,000,000 bytes. 1 MiB is 1,048,576 bytes. The tool keeps those units separate.
Are bits and bytes the same?
No. One byte (B) is eight bits. This tool converts data amounts; it does not turn an amount into a network speed such as Mb/s.
Why does a tiny result use scientific notation?
A small nonzero amount could round to zero at the selected decimal places. Scientific notation keeps it visibly nonzero; large or fractional results can still be approximate.
Why can two apps still show different file sizes?
Unit conversion explains only the unit scale. Display rounding, file-system allocation, and what each app counts can also differ; this tool does not inspect those details.
